Manitoba has an outstanding inventory of rural churches which are diverse in size, style and denomination. Their geographical locations are a silent, yet eloquent, story of settling of this province. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, many of these historic churches are threatened by deterioration and demolition.
In 2003, the Thomas Sill Foundation partnered with the J. M. Kaplan Fund of New York to help identify and preserve outstanding examples of heritage churches in rural Manitoba. Kaplan has provided $134,460 and we have contributed $125,000. The provincial Historic Resources Branch provides technical expertise, as well as funds from existing programs.
Churches approved for grants are selected subject to a process that includes submitting an application and competing against other worthy applicants. Grant funds must be matched by the recipient.
