Manitoba
has an outstanding inventory of rural churches which are diverse
in size, style and denomination. Their geographical locations are
a silent, yet eloquent, story of settling this province. Unfortunately,
for a variety of reasons, many of these historic churches are threatened
by deterioration and demolition.
In
2003, the Thomas Sill Foundation partnered with the J. M. Kaplan
Fund of New York to help identify and preserve outstanding examples
of heritage churches in rural Manitoba. Kaplan provided $134,460
and we contributed $125,000 for a total of $259,460. The provincial
Historic Resources Branch provided technical expertise, as well
as funds from existing programs.
Churches
approved for grants were selected subject to a process that included
submitting an application and competing against other worthy applicants.
Grant funds were matched by the recipient.
