Cash is normally the currency of a charitable foundation. The Thomas Sill Foundation’s gifts-in-kind project is an exception. This program receives and distributes surplus goods to registered charities in Manitoba. Some items are new and others are used. Examples include crafts, desks, clothing computers, toiletries and novelties.
During 2007 – 08 charitable agencies paid only $73,600 to receive goods valued at $830,000. Charges to the charities cover only handling and taxes. Since the beginning of this project in 1995 goods valued at $11,554,000 have been distributed.
In order to take advantage of the program a registered charity will pay an annual membership fee which ranges from $65 to $250 depending on the agency’s budget. The first year fee is always waived in order to encourage use of the program. Last year it served 302 members.
